Small Business Government Grants

Small Business Government Grants

While there are some who are content with getting a weekly paycheck and would shirk the idea of working for themselves, there are also many who dream of starting their own business. You probably fall in the latter group else you would not be here looking for information on small business government grants. After all the idea of having one's own business means not having to report to anyone, as we are the ones to make the decisions and do the planning to run the business effectively.

What do we need to start a small business?

§ Capital – We need money to start our own business, money that we have either collected or saved for our business from a long time or we have to take a loan to gather the capital required for our business.

§ Equipment – In the sense, we will require a place where we can carry on our business activities. It includes not only a place to run a business from but also the machinery, inventory, and possibly necessary additional manpower for it to properly function.

Taking the need for capitol into consideration, it translates into having the money/funds without which the business cannot operate. However, if we lack our own funds, then we must get them elsewhere. So let us discuss the elsewhere's for obtaining small business funding.

We can borrow money from our friends or relatives, and in doing so payment arrangements can be worked out that might make for a comfortable repayment schedule. Additionally, we may not have to pay interest on the loan or pay a much lower interest then if we were to borrow the amount from a bank.

Of course one may find taking a bank loan in order to avoid the ignominy to be a more favorable course then the indebtedness that would be felt if borrowing from family members or friends to initiate the process of starting our business.

Then there the other alternative of small business government grants. Now while the Government of the United States of America does not directly provide loans or assistance for starting a new small business or for the growth of small business, it does lend a helping hand through the SBA. That help is in the form of getting loans at a cheaper rate with the help of “Small Business Administration” or (SBA). While strictly speaking that cannot be called a small business government grant, the interest rates charged can be low enough to make it seem more like a grant than a loan. Nonetheless, keep in mind that the SBA extends these loan only if you are the sole owner of the small business and a single individual handles all operational activities.

Understandably this may not be suitable for your particular needs but again the US government does not presently have a program for small business government grants, thereby a business grant would have to be sought through a private agency or foundation grants.
